Can I break the spell...

I had the pleasure of seeing Mutemath play live at the Boston House of Blues with a few friends earlier in March. I'm not all that familiar with most of their repertoire (especially tracks off their newest 2011 album "Odd Soul") but based on YouTube clips and concert footage I caught while channel surfing some months ago, I was more than open to give them a go. Here are some the show's highlights:
  • Drummer Darren King secures his headphones from falling off with duct tape. After seeing him play, this definitely wasn't just for show.
  • Lighting, video, and staging effects really complimented the song set.
  • The band had a lot of interaction with the crowd, and there was such great energy in the room. Perfect for the size of the venue!
  • They played all the songs from their latest album "Odd Soul" on top of songs from their previous albums.
  • There most well-known song "Typical" served as the encore (linked below):

That's lead singer Paul Meany crowd surfing on a black aero-bed strung with what I can only assume are Christmas lights.

I forget which song this was, but confetti shot out over the crowd multiple times over the course of this number.

Thanks for a great show MuteMath, I would not hesitate to see them again if I had the chance.

Simplicity

Now here's a great reminder for the value of simplicity...especially to foodies.

Tuesday's Tunes - Cult of Personality

Cult of Personality
By: Living Colour

I first came across this rockin' tune on Guitar Hero 3 on the Playstation 2 and have been listening to it again since it became the entrance music for WWE superstar CM Punk. All this warm weather we've been getting in Boston brings out the desire to ROCK OUT in me.

Back in my day...

Purchase the t-shirt on threadless.

The sad thing is this: even the look of that iPod will be "dated" very soon...

I Love Breakfast: Pork Roll

Today's  breakfast spotlight features Pork Roll, also known as Taylor Ham. I was first introduced to this New Jersey delicacy by one of my roommates during my sophomore year of college and boy were my eyes were opened that day! You could say my most early attempts at cooking started at this time, and what I cooked mostly were eggs and/or things for breakfast sandwiches, so this breakfast meat definitely holds a special place in my heart.

Texturally, pork roll is very similar to Spam or bologna, and the seasoning is also similar to Spam. Because the meat is a little softer than your traditional ham, you get some great mixture of textures when you properly pan fry your slices of pork roll. An interesting factoid  from Wikipedia:
A popular breakfast sandwich in the region made with pork roll is known as the Jersey Breakfast, a "Pork Roll, Egg, and Cheese", or a "Taylor Ham, Egg, and Cheese." A Jersey Breakfast always contains pork roll, typically served with american cheese on a hard roll or on a bagel. It is a staple of many delis, diners, bakeries, and breakfast spots in New Jersey. In Philadelphia, the hard roll is commonly replaced with the locally ubiquitous "long roll" used for hoagies and cheesesteaks.

Now for the sad part: I do not know anywhere in the Boston-area that sells pork roll! I have however found places to order them online, but have not brought myself to place an order as of this post. So if you know where to find this fine product in the New England area, or find yourself in the New Jersey/Pennsylvania region, seek out a local deli on what I'd like to nominate as the new "Breakfast of Champions."

Tuesday's Tunes: Revelation Song

Revelation Song - Shane and Shane

Although this song has already been around for the last few years, I had the wonderful opportunity to introduce this at the morning service for CCFC two weeks ago and in my limited perspective, was received well by the congregation. Much like my selection from last week, this is another great song for corporate worship, enjoy!

Revelation Song
By Marc Edwin Allen, Nathan Barcalow, Derek Doherty, Alejandro M. Linares, Randy Strohmeyer

Verse 1
Worthy is the, Lamb who was slain
Holy, Holy, is He
Sing a new song, to him who sits on
Heaven's mercy seat

Chorus
Holy, Holy, Holy
Is the Lord God Almighty
Who was, and is, and is to come
With all creation I sing
Praise to the King of Kings
You are my everything
And I will adore You

Verse 2
Clothed in rainbows, of living color
Flashes of lightning, rolls of thunder
Blessing and honor, strength and glory and power be
to You the only wise King

Verse 3
Filled with wonder, awestruck wonder
At the mention of your name
Jesus your name is power
Breath, and living water
Such a marvelous mystery

And as a bonus, here's the original version by Kari Jobe with the Gateway Worship team:
