Little Batman and Robin

I like toys and collectibles, especially of the geeky variety, and the Funko POP! mini figures have been on my radar for awhile. They have really taken off in the last few years, covering all sorts of television shows and franchises including Marvel and DC super heroes, Disney characters, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles just to name a few, and the list keeps growing!

I finally pulled the trigger on picking up Batman and Robin (Tim Drake version, for those in the know) after noticing a serious lack of Bat-representation on my shelves. I also share these with my 1 year old son, who's taken a liking to the Robin figure. Now the trick is not to go overboard and pick up a dozen of these by the end of the year...which my wife will not like.

Winter is coming...

...and is looking adorable! POP! has made adorable figures of pop culture icons ranging from Michael Jackson, to the Avengers, so a series of figures for Game of Thrones is hardly a surprise.

Suggested Reading: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Vol. 1: Change is Constant
Written by Kevin B. Eastman and Tom Waltz
Art by Dan Duncan

Amazon.com Summary:
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles return to comics in their first IDW adventure! It''s a different world for the Turtles. The group is broken as Raphael wanders the streets of NYC in search of food and shelter. His brothers and Master Splinter are on the search, but so far all they can find is trouble - in the form of mutant alley cat Old Hob and his gang of criminals! The very core of the Turtles family is at stake as the new origin of TMNT is revealed! Join Tom Waltz, Dan Duncan, and TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman for the start of a wild ride!
Originally created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are firmly rooted in the popular superhero comics of it's time, most notably Frank Miller's run on Daredevil and the incredible popularity of Marv Woflman's run on the New Teen Titans.

However, like many of my peers, the original black-and-white comics were not my first exposure to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but rather the cartoon of the late 80's. Shortly after my introduction to the cartoon, I became obsessed with the action figures, and sure enough, my love for the Turtles led me to the kid-friendly Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures published by Archie Comics. I vaguely remember picking up my first issue on a trip to KB Toys (rest in peace, mall-staple of my childhood), and predates my interest in superhero comics by a couple of years.Needless to say, this franchise holds a special place in my geeky heart.

While the Turtles never really went away, they certainly waned in popularity after the initial cartoon launch and the kids of that era grew into teenagers themselves. More recently however, the Turtles are popping up in the news again thanks to a new cartoon from Nickelodeon later in 2012, a new toy line from Playmates who made the original action figures , and even a movie from Michael Bay that's been raising all sorts of controversy. And now, in addition to all of that excitement, TMNT has  alsoreturned as a new ongoing comic series and even enlists one of the original creators, Kevin Eastman, which lends quite a boost in the legitimacy of this series as a torchbearer to a new era for the Turtles.

So how does the new series hold up? Quite nicely if you ask me. While the artwork can be a bit shaky at times, the story itself is a nice blend of what's come before in Turtle lore for a good dose of nostalgia, and doesn't come off at all as stale.

The first four issues of the series have been collected as Volume 1, "Change Is Constant", which I would readily recommend to any fan open to a modern interpretation

Rating: 3.5/5.0

Link Round-up: Week of April 2, 2012

Another work week has come and gone. Only a few items for this week's post, but be sure to check out the video above for some truly bizarre footage: Dancing to "I'm Han Solo" from the new Kinect Star Wars game.
Thanks for reading and have a great Easter weekend!

Iron Man & the Avengers

Of the many comic book-based  movies that have come over the past year or so, I believe Iron Man has remained the best of the bunch and so I couldn't resist picking up this adorable rendition on a recent trip to Target.

There's this little movie coming out on May 4th called The Avengers that I'm very excited for. I still remember when they first announced this project and that movies for both Thor and Captain America would pave the way for the Avengers to assemble. Now a little more than a month away, I'm curious how audiences will receive this super group:

This whole idea of combining multiple popular comic book characters might seem familiar to some of you in the form of the Justice League:

Both teams are ultimately lead by a core trinity: Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor for the Avengers and Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman for the Justice League. While powerhouses each in their own right, you really get to see the solo heroes fleshed out when placed in a team, and that's what I hope we at least get a taste of in the upcoming Avengers movie.

Christmas time is here

Wow, Christmas is just around the corner and I have been really delinquent with posts. Let's see, what are somethings that have happened?

The Mrs. and I picked up our Christmas tree the first weekend of December. Although we don't have a huge space, this is the biggest tree we have had yet, coming in at just over six feet:

We were unboxing the decorations for the tree when I received a phone call from a family member. By the time I got off the phone and turned back to help, T had basically decorated the whole tree by herself! Did I mention she really likes Christmas, as well as decorations that have snowmen?

Also, much to my surprise, I received an early Christmas present a few days later that will appeal to my fellow comic book geeks out there:

Marvel Minimates : Heralds of Galactus! If you look closely enough, you'll agree I fall well within the recommendation of "Ages 8+". What can I say, my wife really "gets" me.

Lastly, I wanted to share five Christmas albums that have received heavy play this December:

A Charlie Brown Christmas: I've listened to this album probably once a day, every work day this month. My Spotify auto-posts on Facebook will confirm that.

Chris Tomlin - Glory in the Highest: An excellent Christmas worship album that features songs both new and old.

A Very She and Him Christmas: If you like She and Him's other albums, and like Christmas music, you probably already own this album.

Phil Wickham - Songs For Christmas: This album has some great arrangements of Christmas hymns

Elf: Music from the Motion Picture: Have you watched Elf already this year? A very fun contemporary classic that has a great soundtrack to boot.

And with that we come to the end of the post! Readers, I leave you with an image of one of my favorite beers for Sam Adams "Winter Offerings" variety pack:

Halt Mutants!

X-Men: First Class recently came out on DVD/Blu-Ray, and while I have really enjoyed all the X-Men movies to hit the big screen (with the exception of X3), I would love to see the X-men take on a Sentinel in a future film.
They're kind of like a more violent version of the Kool-Aid man.
Anyone who grew up watching X-Men: The Animated Series in the 90's will not only immediately have the theme song stuck in their head (see video below), but remember these giant mutant-hunting robots as the first opponent the team faced in the first episode. Oh yea, and here's a 20-year-old spoiler for you, but team member Morph doesn't quite make it out of the skirmish alive...but don't worry, he returns to life in a later season, as X-Men are prone to do in the comics.

Speaking of dead mutants, one of my favorite stories that feature the Sentinels is Days of Future Past, a two-part story set in a dystopian future where the majority of mutants and super-heroes have been eradicated and the survivors are held in an internment camp. Check out this great cover from Uncanny X-Men #142:

In the meantime, Hasbro is making this comic-accurate repaint available at BigBadToystore.com in November 2011. The Sentinel toy collectible stands at 16 inches and is priced at $59.99, basically tugging at the heartstrings (and wallets) of X-Men fans all-around.

Voltron, Defender of the Universe

With the new pricing structure at Netflix set to change in September, I'd like to say I'm planning to cancel my subscription entirely, but they're making it very compelling to at least keep paying for their streaming service.

Looking at the TV shows I've added to my queue over the summer, Netflix keeps upping their game: great dramas like Mad Men and Friday Night Lights, and a slew of comic book-related cartoons like 90's staples X-Men and Spider-Man, and even recent series like last year's Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

This past Friday night, I couldn't help but seeing how the great 80's cartoon Voltron held up to the test of time. Though I'd be hard-pressed to recount any specific storyline, I fondly remember the opening theme which was narrated by Peter Cullen (aka Optimus Prime from Transformers). The theme and the show itself were quite epic and thanks to the magic of YouTube, you can take a look below:

Did I mention that Mattel is releasing a new set of the Voltron lions that will fit action figures of the pilots into them? While it will be gradually released over the course of the year, in the end, this bad boy will run you $290:

What's your favorite cartoon from the 80's?

Transforming Love

All right folks, this is what love is: In celebration of my 30th birthday, Taryn and I drove up to The Clam Box in Ipswich, MA and gorged ourselves on delicious, golden-fried seafood (pictures to come in a future post). On the way back, we swung by the only Toys 'R Us near Boston where she picked up something very special for me...

...a Transformers Masterpiece Grimlock. For those not in the know, he's a giant robot that transforms into a Tyrannosaurus Rex. How does that let him hide from the humans you ask? That question is irrelevant to this man-child.

Yes, I'm still a ten-year-old and my wife not only accepts some of these left-over hobbies, but indulges me in them.  THANK YOU JESUS for creating her and making her such an important and integral part of my life!
